Victorian chapel in Midlands appearing at auction with guide price of £150,000
A former Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in the Midlands during the last year of Queen Victoria’s reign will appear in our next auction.
What’s now known as the Coleshill United Church at 2 Coventry Road in Coleshill will appear in the live-streamed auction on Wednesday 27 March with a guide price* of £150,000+. Ian Tudor, commercial auction director at Bond Wolfe, explained that the property was originally built as a chapel in 1900 when Wesleyan Methodist worshippers outgrew their former premises on nearby Parkfield Road. The chapel was then renamed in 1970 as the Coleshill United Church (Congregational and Methodist), after worshippers from the nearby Congregational Church joined them when their own building closed.
Mr Tudor said: “This former church extends to approximately 2,768 sq ft and subject to planning permission could be suitable for various uses, including community day nursery, education, hospitality, leisure or residential. This is a detached property that currently has a main worship hall with a total capacity of about 90 to 100. There is an integral community hall at the rear that was originally used as a Sunday School, plus two other meeting rooms, an office, kitchen and separate male and female toilets. Built of brick with a pitch tiled roof, the building has new, energy efficient heaters and lighting.”
The church is in a prominent position on the B4117 Coventry Road in the centre of Coleshill, within a mixed commercial and residential environment. This includes the Coleshill Hotel, The Coach Hotel, The Red Lion, The Cameo Function and Conference Suite, local shops and a veterinary practice. Coleshill is conveniently located with good access to the Midlands road network via the nearby M42, M6 and M6 toll.
Coleshill United Church is being offered to bidders on behalf of the The Methodist Church’s Birmingham Circuit. It is just one of 191 lots that are appearing in our next auction, which will start at 8.30am on Wednesday 27 March.
